CANBERRA, TEL AVIV -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has supported the independent Palestinian state but said that all member states need to decide on its UN membership.
In the meantime the U.S. on Thursday for the first time openly said it will exercise its power of veto in the UN Security Council in order to stop Palestine’s attempt to become a full-fledged UN member.
Ban said that he fully supported a two-state solution that would allow Palestinians and Israelis to live side by side in peace and security.
“And I support also the statehood of Palestinians, an independent, sovereign state of Palestine. It has been long overdue," Ban told reporters during his visit to Australia, adding that a "recognition of a state is something to be determined by the member states."
